Chelsea Flower Show 2012
Last Friday my Mum took me to Chelsea Flower Show. It was a glorious sunny day in London and made a change to head west to Chelsea rather than Shoreditch, where I had been most of the week, for my degree show.
Being the old man that I am, I’m no stranger to flowers, gardening and the great outdoors. Though, perhaps I did look a little out of place in a swarm of middle aged, Alan-Titchmarsh-loving women.
We headed down to Chelsea after work at around 4 which timed really well with the weather cooling down to a slightly more pleasant heat and much of the crowds were beginning to hobble back down the streets of the Royal borough to the tube.
We decided to chill out for a bit when we got there, with some tea and cake. I hadn’t had much chance to spend time with my Mum recently, so it was nice just to hang out, listen to some live music and soak up the surroundings of the Royal Hospital grounds.
Then wondered over to the Artisan Gardens. These were a small selection of gardens where designers had to make artistic use of all the materials they used. There were a few funky ideas I liked here, including the use of moss on the side of a shed to create a bobbley, rich textured wall. These gardens all looked a bit scruffy, but in a good way. They looked natural and each designers ideas of being ‘creative’ in the garden was interesting to look at.

,Moving on, I took a ridiculous number of photos at The Chelsea Flower Show. The above is of the beautiful main pathway in the grounds, lined with stunning tall trees. I think I might have something similar on the lead up to my mansion one day. Anyhoo, if I jabbered about all of the photos I took, I would be here for a very long time and my blog would reach a new level of boring. So here’s a selection of snaps from the day that I thought were worth popping in.

The above photo is of the popular L’Occitane garden, inspired by the landscape of Provence. This garden had a huge crowd of people around it. I thought the garden was pretty, however, because we could only view it from one angle it was hard to get a feel of what the garden was like without actually walking around it. A very charming garden though, that reeeally makes me want to go on holiday!

I really liked these squiggly sculptures embedded amongst flower beds and against concrete walls.
I thought the Homebase Teenage Cancer Trust garden had an quite an appealing urban feel.
Inside a marquee there was an eye catching array of chandeliers hung around a load of dangling shades of purple squares. A little bit odd but quite mesmerising.
I loved David Harber’s sculptures and water fountains on show.
My favourite was the above ‘Globe’ which appeared to be illuminated inside, but was actually just coated in a vibrant golden yellow colour. It looked very effective and caught my eye from a far.

I also thought this was quite a funky ad for an artificial grass company with ‘easy bug’ cars which were swamped in grass. It looked quite fun but they didn’t provide much information with the display so, in my opinion, missed an opportunity there.

‘Celebrity’ Diarmuid created this beast of a ‘garden’ for the show. It was absolutely humungous. There wasn’t much elegance to it and all the scaffolding used made clanky noises in the breeze as though we were on a building site. This was basically just a PR stunt to get attention to the show, draw the crowds and get Diarmuid featured in the papers. It wasn’t very Chelsea and there really wasn’t much to it. But fair play to him for creating something that creates such a buzz and demands the attention of visitors and media alike. However, bearing in mind the size of the pyramid thingy I’m not suprised. Next year I would like to see a giant pig or perhaps a Corgi instead please. I think that would go down well.

Maybe a giant dragon at Chelsea would be cool? This little guy looked fun. It would fit in with the surroundings of Chelsea in just the same unsuitable fashion.

Right, jabbering over. I had a lovely afternoon/ evening with my wonderful Mother. A nice little treat on a sunny summer’s day in London.
To summarise: cake, music, shopping, flowers, pollen, more flowers, sneezing, even more flowers, lots of photos and a glass of Champagne to round off the day. Super. x

This is a million times better than those T-Mobile stunts! (Apart from the parking fine one, that’s pretty cool).
I used to have one of these!!! I loved it.
Ohhh how I miss being a little kid.
Remember these? -
I recently stumbled across and old toy record player made by Fisher Price in the 1970s. I’m sure many of you will recognise this iconic toy … As with many 40-year old toys, it was in a bit of a sad state and a couple of the records had been lost. Technology has moved on since it was manufactured and making some new records for it seemed like a nice way to merge old technology and new.

This quote really makes me think. Partly about how touching it is to see old couples still together through the long hardships of life. But also it led me to think about society in general. It’s sad how we live in such a throw away society. We’re so strongly influenced by consumerism that we constantly buy new, upgrade or disregard what we’ve got. Quite sickening really, this constant constant constant…
This is beautiful. So inspiring.
In theory, this is a good plan. But in practise, it’s not always that easy.
Don’t usually blog about music but I’m really pleased to have discovered Santigold recently and love her new track! Looking forward to hearing more from her in the near future, fingers crossed she’ll hookup with M.I.A sometime because they would sound amazing together!

Pantone Easter
I love these little DIY Pantone eggs. I’m tempted to make my own to go along side my Pantone mug. Created by Graphic Designer Jessica Jones, they’re the perfect gift for any designer at heart this Easter!

Love this idea! Simple, but effective. Just what I like.
So many people are addicted to money, it’s sickening. Hopefully this execution will hit home to some people.
